A mystery cabinet

by Cristina Colli

Can you guess what this cabinet is for?

Hint – the cats love it.

And use it.

A lot.

Have you guessed yet?

All right…let’s open it.

It’s a kitty loo!

Following my directions, P turned an IKEA kitchen cabinet into this sleek, contemporary cat loo.

With it simple lines, the cabinet blends in well with the rest of the furniture, and the cats like it more than their old plastic litter box – well, this  is really like a penthouse bathroom, isn’t it? The kitty loo also solves the “nasty smells” problem extremely well, which is an extra bonus!

And how did we make it?

As you might remember, I’d seen a kitty loo months ago on Ikea Hackers, and I took that as my inspiration.

I wanted a contemporary, low white cabinet of about 100 cm in length; after much looking we chose an IKEA FAKTUM wall cabinet, positioned on its side. P assembled the cabinet, cut the hole for the cat flap and fixed it; he then used self adhesive vinyl to cover the sides and the interior of the cabinet, so that it looks nice and the litter doesn’t fall into the holes.

We decided to fix a BESTA push opener to the cabinet, to make opening the door easier, and P  also screwed a hook on the inside of the cabinet door, so that we can store the litter scoop in the kitty loo.

We left the cat flap open for a day to help our cats familiarise with their new loo, and they took to it very quickly.

We’re really very pleased with this cabinet, so thanks a million to the original IKEA Hacker who came up with this brilliant idea!

What a clever idea!! I have to admit that I don’t like cats – sorry, they just give me shivers – and I certainly don’t like seeing litter trays, but I wouldn’t mind visiting a house where such things were hidden away in a bespoke cupboard!!

Thanks Anne! A good friend of mine feels the same about cats – she finds them unsettling. They’re independent creatures with a mind of their own, I give you that, and I like them and admire for that. They’re also very sweet, and entertaining – better than TV!

Brilliant Cristina! I first thought it was some sort of storage, for little items that tend to look messy when in the open, but since I don’t have a cat I didn’t guess right.
A very clean and simple design, with white on white makes it disappear too!

Thanks Jenny! I do have storage for all the little items you’re talking about – they always seem to multiply, don’t they???

A very Happy Christmas to you too, Anthony, and a fantastic 2012!

Brilliant idea. But, my neighbor, who has 2 cats, was wondering about the lack of light inside the cupboard. Do they (the cats) really like i being dark in there?

Cristina Colli December 18, 2011 at 19:46

Hi Nini, you got me thinking…my cats took up to the new “litter suite” very quickly, however I guess that they’d probably be more comfortable with some light…so tomorrow I’m sending my husband to look for some affordable motion-detection light to fix inside the cabinet. I’ll let you know how it goes :)

Why would you install a light?! Cats see perfectly in the dark and if they had to use a normal litterbox at night there wouldn’t be a light either!

Cristina Colli December 19, 2011 at 12:08

I just thought a light would make the litterbox more comfortable for my cats, especially since they’re getting older…
