What do you think of this table? I love it! When I saw it at Faye’s blog You Are the River I immediately filed it in my “style files”; I love the contrast between the rough, lived in texture of the wooden top and the sleek, contemporary legs.

But the best thing is, Faye made it! Oh yes, you heard me right – she bought an old second-hand table and transformed it into this beauty. You can see how she did it here – very inspiring.
Another piece of furniture I really like is this lovely bench that Morgan from The Brick House made.

This bench was originally part of a side yard fence, and Morgan shows you how she turned it into a beautiful piece of furniture here.
When we lived in Italy, my husband P and I bought an old madia, a sort of cabinet traditionally used in Tuscany for storing food, and P restored it to its original beauty, which meant a lot of sanding and beeswax polishing. In the end it looked really good, and had a lot of character; I don’t have a photo of the restored madia, unfortunately, so you’ll have to take my word for it
When we moved to Dublin we left it to one of his sisters; it was heavy and bulky, and since we’d chosen to rent a furnished house we knew that we probably wouldn’t be able to find room for such a large piece of furniture. I was sorry to see it go, but I knew that P’s sister would enjoy our lovely madia, and I was happy to know that it wouldn’t languish in storage for years – which would be a total waste.
This September P and I are moving to England; in the next three months we’ll be busy organising all the various transactions necessary to make an international move for 2 people plus 2 cats as smooth as possible. Although there are a few activities I’m not particularly looking forward to (packing being the main one!) we’re very excited about this new adventure. We’ll relocate to the Cotswolds, near Oxford, which we visited last June, and this time we’ve decided to rent an unfurnished property, because living with someone else’s decorating style can be quite hard, especially for someone like me
Both P and I like simple, uncluttered interiors furnished in an eclectic style – modern mixed with vintage, ethnic and old pieces – and Faye’s table and Morgan’s bench are examples of furniture we’d be very happy to live with. What about you?
I love hearing from you, so please leave a comment to let me know your thoughts about this post, and if you like it share the link with others.

Wow, you are moving! Moving can be exciting. Personally I’ve no intention of moving for some time yet.
I love wooden furniture, though I have less contemporary tastes than you. I like simple, all-wood furniture in warm tones. Most of my furniture is pine, birch, or oak.

Hi Alison,
yes moving can be exciting, and we both are very excited
I don’t like pine so much, but I love birch. Oak is beautiful too, and I prefer it bleached.
Crstina good luck on the move – you’re one international jet setter you know! My home is for sale too and all being well I’ll be in the New Forest by the end of the Summer. You’re going to love the Costwolds as much as I do the Forest so let’s compare notes soon. PS LOOVE that table by Morgan, it’s a classic!!
