Angelic voices and the power of connection

by Cristina Colli

Did you see the video  of  Lux Aurumque? Released in 2010, the video features 185 singers from 12 different countries singing together in a virtual choir conducted by Eric Whitacre.

This amazing choir touched my heart and reminded me why connecting creates beauty.

I’ve never been part of a choir (not gifted in the voice department, I’m afraid) but I love music and I believe that sound has healing properties.  A few weeks ago I attended a workshop called The Alchemy of Voice, led by Stewart Pearce – a wonderful, amazing soul. There were about 40 participants, and during the workshop we did some chanting; what started as a mixed array of voices slowly turned, to my deep surprise,  into a beautiful, harmonious choir.  It was a wonderful experience and I felt truly part of something greater than the sum of all its parts.

So can you imagine the joy and profound sense of connection experienced by  the 2,052  singers who were part of Eric’s second virtual choir? Yes, you read right: 2,052 singers. From 58 countries. Fantastic!

In this TED Talk you can see Eric Whitacre explaining how he found his passion for music, and how the two virtual choirs came to be.  Whitacre also shares testimonials from a few singers, and I’m sure you’ll find the whole talk moving and inspiring.

Enjoy the Virtual choir 2.0 singing “Sleep”.

This stuff sends shivers up my spine and makes me awed and humbled at how capable humans are of producing beauty. My tendency is to focus on our destructiveness, so thank you for reminding me how much beauty we also create in the world. Even though I’m not religious, I attended evensong at Durham Cathedral found myself profoundly moved at the setting, the voices, and the peace I found there.

Hi Jennifer, I’m not religious either – spiritual yes, but not religious. I find choirs wonderfully soothing and moving though, so I can understand how you felt at Durham Cathedral.
Re destructiveness versus creativity – I know that the human being is possibly the most destructive form of life on the planet (remember the film The Matrix, and how agent Smith compared the human race to a virus?) however I choose to focus only on what I like and want more of in my life, because I believe that positive attitude & thoughts attracts positivity, and vice versa.

There is nothing that compare to being part of a choir — the amazing transcendence of the individual to the collective voice is a transforming experience. I’m so glad you got to experience that! I used to sing with a few choirs before we moved to San Diego…. your post reminded me how much I miss being part of a music group… must go find…

It’s good to know that this post reminded of your love for music. I hope you’ll find a music group close to you very soon :)
