Design inspiration: creative ideas for original headboards

by Cristina Colli

Choosing a headboard that makes an impact is a simple but effective way to create a focal point in the bedroom, so today’s design inspiration is all about lovely headboards. Enjoy!

Love the use of old doors as headboards. I like the wicker chest at the foot of the bed, and the chandelier in the right bedroom - very French.

A bamboo screen is a neat idea for this headboard; neutral colours and accessories work together to create a calm, natural feel. Love the piled up pillows, and the ethnic bedside tables, too.

This lovely blue screen surely attracts attention! Beautifully carved, it's elegant but it gives a fresh look to the room. I like the yellow accents too - bright and cheerful.

Fantastic use of driftwood for the headboard on the left, and salvaged wood for the bedroom on the right. Word of advice: don't place vases over the headboard if you have cats - you might wake up in the middle of the night with a very sore head (just ask my husband...).

If you like reclaimed wood, you'll love these gorgeous headboards - different shape, but same wonderful texture. By the way, can I have the bedside table on the right, please?!?

More reclaimed wood beauties! The tall headboard (or better, feature wall) on the left is stunning, and definitely makes an impact. The yellow painted word on the right is sweet and fresh, and works very well with the grey.

I love the use of reclaimed wood, and the blue screen headboard. What about you? What’s your favourite headboard?

Cool Cristina! My wife has an uncle in Wisconsin with a barn full of old doors, cabinets, windows, decorative trim, etc. He collected this stuff over several decades of rehabbing real estate. Now he’s retired and he lets us have whatever we want out of there. We call it “Bob’s Bargain Barn.”
Recycling old stuff is fun and it’s great what you end up with when you’re done!
Peace, JR

Wow JR, that barn sounds like a true treasure trove! I wish I could browse it too…I like giving life to old furniture, and sometimes one single piece can add a lot of character to a room and completely transform it. Thanks for stopping by :)

Hi JR,
Where in WI does your uncle live? Is there a way of buying from him? I have been looking for rustic vintage doors for a while.

I can honestly say I’ve never read anything about heardboards before and it will take something to top this even if I do it again. It’s SO creative and thinking sideways with an alternative eye that really snazzes up a bedroom. Now I just need to snazz up myself in there ;)

I luv the use and look of the old doors for the headboard. What a great idea…now to find some old doors or making new ones look old. :)

Yes that’s not so easy…salvage yards, or maybe a trip to France – now that would be nice :)

Some gorgeous ideas. I love the boards with “Love” written across them – I agree it looks great against the grey background.
