Elica – Extractor hoods with a twist

by Cristina Colli

Ventilation is essential in the kitchen, to remove steam and food odours. Opening the window helps, but the best solution to prevent condensation and lingering smells is to install a good quality extractor hood.

Elica’s extractor hoods, however, go well beyond practicality: beautifully designed, they range from unobtrusive to bold, and can easily become the focal point of a kitchen. So let’s have a look at some funky extractor hoods!

Designed by Elica Design Centre, Adagio is an elegant, futuristic extractor hood that stays hidden behind the  cooking hob and emerges only when activated; the perimetric aspiration system ensures optimum effectiveness in cleaning the environment from fumes and vapours, making Adagio perfect for cooking islands in open plan interiors.

OM, designed by Elica Design Centre, features a simple but innovative design. Made of tempered glass, it is extremely easy to clean. Available in white, black and silver, OM can be customised with drawings and images. Measuring only 55 cm, the colourful, compact Mini OM is ideal for small spaces.

Designed by Stefano Giovannoni, Bubble is an original, compact extractor hood that leaves plenty of headroom and makes cleaning an easy task; Bubble can be suspended directly on the wall, and features circular light fittings around the extracting part.

Designed by Elica Design Centre, Space is extremely silent and includes an exclusive, washable filter;  Space also features a special function that can be activated to purify the air for 5 minutes every half hour. Its clean, minimal design adds an elegant, almost zen-like quality to the contemporary kitchen.

Designed by Elica Design Centre, Legend is bound to make a bold statement and become the focal point of the kitchen. Its slightly asymmetrical shape is elegant, visually light and futuristic, and is perfect for island units.

Designed by Elica Design Centre, Sinfonia (Symphony) is graceful, sleek and contemporary, and reminds me of delicate oriental lacquer tables.

Alba, designed by Elica Design Centre, is a flexible extractor hood that also provides ambient lighting; shaped as a luminous pyramid or cube,  Alba can be hung over an island unit or be wall-mounted.

Designed by Fabrizio Crisà, Skin is an essential, streamlined and original extractor hood that also features an adjustable LED functional light. Made of micro perforated steel, Skin is also available  in glass, and in a  compact version (55 cm) perfect for small kitchens.

Menhir, designed by David Lewis, is a sculptural, monolithic extractor hood especially suitable for island cooking units. Made with two stainless steel sheets curved and assembled together, Menhir arced shape is very contemporary and evocative.

Sometimes extractor hoods cannot be ducted to the outside, and the only alternative is installing a hood with filters for re-circulation and purification of the air. Ola, designed by Elica Design Centre, is a functional, attractive hood & air purifier that doubles as a glamorous pendant lamp – what more can you ask for?

This is only a selection of extractor hoods and air purifiers from Elica that I particularly like; to see more of their products, have a look at their website.

I wanted to say on my previous comment… but I got a skype call…. so now I will continue. I used to really not appreciate this very clean, modern, sleek style exampled in these kitchen designs. But over time, I came to really like it… to the point that I would seriously consider it as a design option. The photos are REALLY great!
