House tour: coastal décor for a lovely cottage

by Cristina Colli

A few days ago I  came across  a gorgeous coastal cottage  that I simply had to share with you. Owner  Alex Wijnen lovingly decorated her new home with a palette of white, light blue & greys warmed up with some wooden furniture and beautiful vintage pieces. The result is a light and airy house which reminds of the beach without being too obvious.

Let’s have a tour of this charming cottage!

The outside of this cottage makes me think of Summer and lazy days. The mix of dark blue and white is fresh and crisp.

Different views of the dining area. The extensive use of white makes the compact space look much bigger than it is. Light grey gives an elegant touch to the panelling, and blue is very fresh. Wooden accents add warmth, and balance the interior. I like the deceptive simplicity of all the details, which makes the room airy yet welcoming.

The living room is another perfect example of how to make a room look cosy and welcoming without cluttering it. All the different textures do the trick nicely, while the light colour palette keep the space luminous. The coffee table is definitely my favourite piece in the room.

More photos of the living room; can you see how the scheme flows harmoniously from room to room? And just look at the texture of that coffee table...

More white & blue for the master bedroom, with sea-inspired details like the oars and the sailor doll.

A soft grey gives the second bedroom a calm, easy to live with feeling - just perfect for guests!

Guests also have this lovely cabinet to enjoy...aren't they lucky?

Finally, a look at the bathroom; although Alex says that this was done on a budget, the room is graceful and airy, thanks to the light colours and the careful attention given to accessories and furnishing details.

You can see more photos of this cottage on Flickr, including a series of before and after shots that show how Alex turned a rather dark and dingy cottage into a luminous, welcoming retreat.

Alex runs her own graphic design company, Defteling Design, and sells her handmade beautiful illustrations on her Etsy shop. These are my personal favourite prints from her shop:

Incidentally, they would both fit very well in this cottage décor! Many thanks to Alex for letting us into their house, and I hope you enjoyed the tour as much as I did.

What a gorgeous house! I love the living room, so intimate. And those bathroom cabinet knobs are delightful.

Hey Mary, hlad you enjoyed the post. Changing knobs can update and improve the look of old furniture, and these ones are lovely, I agree.
