Living outdoor, kitchens, and an original window treatment

by Cristina Colli

The last few weeks I’ve been really busy, so I didn’t have much time to browse interior design e-magazines. Yesterday night I finally dedicated some time to this favourite activity of mine, and today I’m sharing some photos that really caught my eyes. Enjoy!

The porch of this old farmhouse in Southern Tuscany doubles up as sitting and dining area. I like the purple door and shutters, the vintage table and the cozy, informal feeling of this outdoor room. It makes me want to grab a good book and spend a lazy day reading, napping in the warm breeze and eating delicious food with good friends.  The curtains are a lovely addition and certainly come handy to keep the heat at bay during the Summer. There are many things I love about this kitchen and dining area – cat included! Grey kitchens wouldn’t normally be my first choice, but in this case grey works extremely well with the airy, luminous interior, the polished concrete floor and the fantastic dining table made of reclaimed wood. I’d love to have a table like this, what about you?

I also like the three  pendants hung over the table; although completely different in shape and materials, they look good together and add a quirky touch to the room. The whole apartment is lovely, have a look at other pictures here (photos by Morten Holtum via Skona Hem)

This London house has a completely different feeling; I like the white scheme, the beautiful bay window,  the uncluttered look and the chunky wooden work surface. My favourite design idea is the breakfast area, which is basically a continuation of the work surface; the green chair really lifts the scheme and gives a lovely, fresh look to the room. Finally, a brilliant idea for a window treatment. These unusually shaped windows feature perforated aluminium screens specifically designed for the renovation of an old palace in Southern Italy. I love the motifs created by  sunlight on the floor and walls, and the magical glow of light at night time. This would be fairly easy to replicate for standard windows, either cutting plain wooden shutters, using oriental carved shutters,  a lattice screen…an idea definitely worth exploring! You got me daydreaming with your photos; the window treatment reminds me of the old baths in an old castle in the Lebanese mountains (hammams); the hammams were segregated of course, and women had a lot of space and warm water to bathe in and relax; the ceiling was perforated with thick colored glass so that only a soft light would filter through. Same idea.

Arabic motifs are the inspiration behind the design of the aluminium screens, I see why they reminded you of the hammans in Lebanon. Bathing in that old castle sounds like a lovely experience…I’d like that!

Cristina,
I just love all your photographs. I could look at kitchens all day. I especially love spending more time outdoors at this time of year.

Thank you Angela. I love kitchens too – maybe because I spend quite some time in them ;) I love spending time outdoor too, unfortunately the Irish weather has been particularly temperamental lately…definitely not suitable for outdoor living.

I love those aluminum panels. They are gorgeous. And that Tuscan porch area. Very inspiring.

Thanks Diana. I love the panels too, and I’m actually thinking of doing something similar for my place – not in aluminium, but in wood. The porch is gorgeous, I thought you might like it :)
