Tim Brown, CEO of innovation and design firm IDEO, talks about the relationship between play and creative thinking. Tim talks about three stages of creative thinking that are typically associated with play: exploration (in terms of quantity); building (as in thinking with your hands); role play (as in acting it out).
I find his words about exploration particularly thought-provoking. Tim says that as adults we tend to lose our playful attitude; when our ideas are similar to someone else’s ideas, we usually stop ourselves exploring them further. This way, our desire for originality actually turns into self-edit and hinders our creativity.
Tim’s TED talk is interesting, inspiring and entertaining, and I love his playful attitude. Enjoy!
