Why connecting creates beauty

by Cristina Colli

Yesterday I came across a video that struck a chord in me, and made me think of the beauty of connecting.  The video shows a choir singing “Lux Aurumque” by Eric Whitacre. Music always touches my soul, and this piece is particularly beautiful, but what truly amazes me is the fact that the choir is virtual.

This project started when a young girl sent Eric Whitacre a video of herself performing one of his chorus pieces;  Eric explains how this video touched him deeply, and gave him the idea to create and conduct a virtual choir.

He recorded himself conducting the choir, uploaded the video on YouTube and sent out a call to singers across the world. The response was overwhelming, and in the end 185 singers from 12 different countries took part in the choir.

Eric Whitacre says:  “it was all about connecting, about connecting with these people all over the world. These individuals, alone, together.”

Technology allowed singers from distant places – who might otherwise never had the opportunity, or resources – to sing in a choir conducted by Eric Whitacre, share their talent, and bring joy to an amazing number of people.

I’m very grateful to live in a time where technology can bring together people from all over the world, giving us the opportunity to connect, learn, share information, and create beauty on a scale that is much greater than the sum of all its parts.

I believe that we’re all connected, and that when we share our talents, our gifts, we create a choral, amazing, powerful energy that contributes to humanity’s growth and evolution.

It doesn’t matter what type of gift we share. Whether you’re helping clean up the local park, participating in a forum, organising a play for school children, creating a mural for a community project, singing in a  choir (real or virtual!) …just remember that when you connect, you create beauty.

Enjoy the video, and be inspired!

As a choral singer, I wish to thank you for sharing with us this video.
I would also like to take this opportunity to contribute to your story with my own choral impressions and memories.
I have been singing in an academic choir for years. As a member of an entity such as a choir, in which both success and failure depend on one, and vice versa, one depends on all the others, the greatest accomplishment exists not only in the harmony of voices, but also in the joy and beauty that harmony produces.
Quite often, ‘a cappella’ singing in mixed choirs can be compared with the angels’ deeds.

Hi Ni Ini, and thank you so much for contributing your choral impressions and thoughts – you’re so right about harmony producing joy and beauty! And yes, choirs often sounds like angels singing…magical!

In 2010, I had sung this with the choir I’m a part of. But I had no idea about the virtual choir, perhaps I was just too busy rushing about (I’m sure other choristers knew) or I was just to captivated by its’ beauty. Anyway, thank you for helping me discover the composer. You are lovely, really =)

Hello!
I happened upon your website from a link on another website. I am very grateful that I came here. I am enjoying perusing the articles and listening to the videos. I feel that these things are expanding my world! How wonderful! (I have always wanted a connection to something greater than myself. Being a sensitive soul, it is very difficult to find others like me.)

I just wanted to say that Eric’s choir sounded magnificent! The singing touched me so deeply that I wept! Please continue your inspiring articles, beautiful photos, and uplifting videos. The world needs them!
